As mentioned before, in Manilva and Puerto de la Duquesa the main attraction is the golfcourt of Duquesa. As described in the Golf section in these pages a key attraction of Manilva and Puerto de la Duquesa is off course Duquesa Golf. The existence of this facility means that beach, boating, and golf pleasures all come together right here in Manilva.
Do visit the Castillo de la Duquesa, a refurbished 18th century fortress where some town hall offices, expositions, and other events are held. Near the Castillo de la Duquesa, an excavation has revealed that Sabinillas has been built on the site of a fairly elaborate Roman fishing village. Up along the river Manilva, one finds wonderful hiking territory and some Roman sulphur baths later used by the moors and left intact by Christians. The baths are smelly and warm all year, like any worthwhile sulphur baths. The water is of course flowing and on the exposed parts of the stream near the constructed baths, it is surprising to see fish and frogs perfectly happy in this highly sulphuric environment. Many visitors collect mud from a special spot on the other side of the stream and cover themselves in it for its health benefits before washing off one last time in the baths or directly in the stream. The Moors apparently used these baths subsequently but their settlement in the area faded away for unknown reasons.
You can also take a short jaunt to the village of Manilva itself, famous for its white grapes and wine production. Manilva wine is a sweet wine: try it and see what you think.. After the reconquista, Christian authorities concerned that this area of the coast was undefended sent agricultural workers to the area. For this purpose they founded the village of Manilva on overlooking hills in order to give the local population a chance to better defend itself from Turkish and Moorish pirate attacks. |
