Here below you will find a small summary regarding Esteponas history

Esteponas history is a mix of various civilisations, phenicians, romans and arabs, whereby the arabs where settled here longest and left the richest heritage (fortifications, towers etc.)

However, one can assume that the antic Estepono existed long before the arabs occupied the territory of "Estebunna" and "Alextebuna".

The arabe appellation ceased to exist in the year 1456 under Rey Enrique IV de Castilla. This was the start of Esteponas now known history as the same king ordered the reconstruction of the castle by D. Juan Fernández Pacheco, Marqués de Villena.

Under the reigns of Doña Juana la Loca it was under Marbellas jurisdiction, for absence of the Reyes Católicos. With some more than 600 citizens did Estepona obtain from King Felipe V its total and absolut independance and it was from this moment that administration developped the natural sights of the precious Comarca, a unique natural landscape with a Natural Park like the Sierra Bermeja and with incredible views from its top to the Straits of Gibraltar and the Hercules towers.
