In the sixties, Sotogrande was a holiday village which was exclusively visited by Spanish tourists. In the last decades also people from outside of Spain got interested in this area, especially those who are surching for more tranquility than in Marbella or Puerto Banús. An exclusive resort frequented since the 1960’s by distinguished Spaniards, Sotogrande has over recent years increasingly appealed to foreign investors and holidaymakers seeking a place somewhat quieter than the Marbella or Puerto Banús environments.
Apart from the incredible golf courses onsite (see the relevant section), Sotogrande also boasts the Costa del Sol’s most attractive equestrian centre, and an international school with a great reputation if you are going to live here with your children all year-round.
Sotogrande is divided by the N340 motorway. On the south side is Sotogrande Playa, the oldest part of the town and where the Club de Golf de Sotogrande is located. On the north side is Sotogrande Alto, a newer and hillier area, where the clubs of Valderrama, and la Reserva are situated.
Indeed the resort is more family-friendly than some other areas on the coast, with a number of activities such as kayaking and other water sports available and that can be practiced at the mouth of the Guadiaro or on the Sotogrande beach itself.
Finally, a number of sailing regattas are held here every year and, as you would expect, yachting is important. The pleasure port is being extended, with a number of residential islands being created so that owners may moor their boats on their garden. |
