As its name and the following chart indicate, Spain’s Costa del Sol has some of the best, sunniest, and most reliable weather in the world. If you spend a week here between May and September you are likely to see very little or no grey skies or rain.

Indeed, the only weather-related problems here are drought and the sunburn. The reservoir network functions well enough to reduce the impact of drought years, but every year, a handful of north-European tourists allow themselves to burn to the extent of being admitted into the hospital! They just can’t get enough of that sun…

Below we have included average monthly temperatures for Marbella, whose temperature on any given day may be very slightly warmer than the rest of the towns on the coast as its geographic location makes it somewhat more shielded from the wind. In General, the Costa del Sol gets just enough wind for action sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing, but nothing like the unrelenting winds of the Costa del la Luz, in the Cádiz direction.

It should be noted that temperatures in the mountain ranges along the coast will drop somewhat. The tallest of these are Sierra Bermeja just above Estepona, whose summit is Pico de los Reales at 1450 metres, and Sierra de las Nieves, off the road to Ronda from San Pedro, whose tallest peak is the Torecilla at 1918 metres. Both of these mountains get snow, in winter. On Pico de los Reales, it rarely lasts more than 48 hours.

However, as you go further into the interior and reach lower altitudes the effect is reversed, and the temperature often comparable to a desert environment despite quasi-omnipresent greenery. The interior cities of Cordoba, Jerez, and Sevilla and their surrounding plateaus are well-known for their unbearable summer heat. On the coast, the wind-chill factor prevents these extremes.
